North Carolina governor signs proclamation designating September as Campus Fire Safety Month
Program enters its sixth year with 139 proclamations having been issued to date
BELCHERTOWN, Mass., March 8, 2010 — North Carolina Governor Beverly Perdue is the seventh governor to sign a proclamation in 2010 for Campus Fire Safety Month which will occur in September. Since 2005, 139 proclamations have been issued by the nation’s governors as well as resolutions being passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Schools use September as an opportunity to educate students about what they need to know about stopping a potentially fatal fire from happening and what to do if one should break out.
In the current academic year, 4 people have been killed in campus-related fires, the lowest on record. Since Campus Firewatch began gathering information in 2000, 139 people have died in campus-related fires across the nation with over 80 percent occurring in off-campus housing.
“Automatic fire sprinklers and smoke alarms are vital tools in helping to stop needless fire deaths,” said Ed Comeau, fire safety advocate and publisher of Campus Firewatch. “Education is also critically important because the knowledge they have may save their lives, no matter where they are – in a restaurant, a movie theater, a nightclub or someone else’s home. With more schools educating students about fire safety we will see the number of people that needlessly die each year continue to go down.”
